Early Childhood Development Support Services
Helping a former non-profit achieve success in the professional growth industry with a new brand and a powerful online learning platform.
In 2014 ECDSS approached me to develop a branding strategy as they moved away from a government funded initiative and moved towards a for-profit business model. Maintaining the integrity and trust they had built over the years as a government program was incredibly important to them – but so was ensuring their future success as a professional corporation.
One year later I was also asked to redevelop their website to bring it into alignment with their new branding, and create an online hub for their training and learner-based activities. Working with their main support staff, I identified their main goals for a new website including increased learner engagement and gaining the trust of industry partners.
Going into the branding project I made an effort to focus on their target market. Coming from a non-profit background, their current customers differed from the ideal customer they hoped to attract with their new business model. The aim was to maintain the relationships with their existing customers while attracting new ones. ECDSS was extremely happy when I explained how their new branding was going to achieve this.
ECDSS indirectly serves entire communities – by providing professional development to people who work in family services – their services extend to many facets of a town or city. Using this idea I created a multifaceted design concept to reflect the many ways their services positively impact a community.
Armed with the knowledge of their goals and target market, I created a comprehensive brand package to be used across all their points of contact. This included a new logo, promotional materials and social media imagery; even their training manuals and support materials for their workshops received a makeover.
ECDSS was frustrated with their existing website and needed to update (in their own words) “all of it!” While the website served a very basic function, it was clunky, unwieldy to edit and the custom CMS it was built on was outdated and had many security vulnerabilities.
They had been tied to it for so long because of a custom functionality they used to manage all of the Capital Region’s home visitation requests for at-risk or disadvantaged new parents. When I assured them we could easily maintain this functionality while building them a new visitor facing website, they were ecstatic.
Using WordPress as the foundation, I custom built an eye-catching theme and built a cohesive design aligned with their new branding. Their existing messages were adjusted and aligned with their target market and each page was made effective in guiding their visitors to specific actions and predetermined goal funnels.
But I didn’t stop there.
Once the website looked good and was optimized for visitor interaction I went back under the hood and created a powerful learning management system for ECDSS to offer their training online. They now have the capability to offer their courses 100% on their website or create complementary online resources for their in-person workshops and training sessions.
Complete with learner profiles, self-led learner features and instructor-led testing and check ins – the new website is a boon to their business model. It adds a level of value to their customers and partners no other company in their industry currently has.

Since launching their new branding and website, ECDSS has seen an increase in the number of learners and engagement for events like their annual conference – which sold out well in advance of the event date.
In late 2015 they moved into a larger building to accommodate a higher number of learners for their in-person workshops and their website’s eCommerce features have removed a key friction point between customers and training.
Being able to actively monitor their students and provide timely, helpful resources with their learning management system has facilitated a new way for ECDSS to communicate with, and lead their learners through, their training and workshops.
